Over the 2009 Memorial Day weekend my friends Jeff Stewart and Keto Shimizu invited Arthur Nicholls, Jeremiah Cohick and me to Jeff’s family cabin in Calaveras County. For most of us, it was our first time visiting The Sierras and we did not know what to expect. The mountain air was such a pleasant change from the heavy stuff we breathe in Los Angeles. And while hiking in Calaveras Big Trees State Park I was reminded of what should be of real importance in our lives, friends and family.

Keto is a budding but accomplished filmmaker. She documented our entire trip and has put together a very personal “video poem” of five friends spending a special time in a special place. The video celebrates the peaceful beauty of the woods, the winding roads, and some great wine tasting experiences.* She can say more with her images here, than I can ever say with words.

It was quite a trip. I am looking forward to a return visit to Calaveras County.

* Of course the Digital Dandelion and Bottle Buzz team had to visit some wineries while we were there. If you watch the video, you will see we dropped into the tasting rooms of Bodega del Sur. Hatcher and Stevenot when we visited Murphys. We also toured the countryside to visit Brice Station, Ironstone and my personal favorite Twisted Oak. Even if you don’t drink wine, it is worth the drive up to Twisted Oak to see the gonzo Burma Shave like signs that lead you to your destination.
